Students urged to have their say at BCU Student Council Meeting
Students have been urged to give their say at the Student Council Meeting at Birmingham City University.
The gathering is set to take place at Millennium Point from 5pm on Tuesday 17th November with attendance from the students as well as the Student Union officers.
Thomas Clarke, the Student Voice Co-Ordinator, said: ‘The Student Council is an opportunity for open discussion amongst the students where they will have the chance to voice any problems they may be facing and give their opinions about their university experience and ways that it can be improved in general’
“It is the chance and gives the students the control to make changes within their Union, their City and their University by suggesting new ideas and making decisions about what the Union does to represent them”
Clarke adds: ‘in regards to submitting an idea to the council- these ideas usually have to be submitted a week before the next upcoming Student Council for consideration and then it would be discussed in the meeting- where students will vote on them’
“Any student can submit an idea and it can be pretty much anything that would improve the student experience at BCU.”
Various things will be happening at the Student Council Meeting including going over Student Officer Reports.
Clarke says: “Every member of the Student Union Executive Team (both Full and Part Time) has to submit a report to the Council about their activities over the past few weeks”
“In the Council meeting, it is then up to council to decide whether they are happy with all they have been doing or if they are not this is the chance to ask questions of the officers and the work that they have been doing.”
Clarke further explains: “there will also be further reviews of certain policies where the officers will come forward with the policy list and include their recommendations to the council on what they think should be done about the policy.
“This could include renewing the policy for one year, rewriting the policy or completely removing it- the council are in complete control”
Clarke says: “also a voting system will be used for the first time this year at the Student Council we will be using an online voting system that enables all voting to be done anonymously.”
“For this to work and to work effectively, we would encourage all members to bring along either a smartphone or a laptop.”
The student council runs 6 times throughout the academic year, with a good turnout each time.
With the changes being made to the Student Council sessions, Clarke says: ‘this time round there should be an even better turnout than the previous one.’
